Tammy Smith has 25 years of experience in public education as a junior high and high school math teacher and as a middle school administrator. During her 13 years as a secondary math teacher, she worked with many different groups of teachers to integrate manipulatives into the secondary math classroom. During the last five years as principal at a middle school, she has led a staff of 50 teachers in the implementation of school wide instructional strategies to improve student learning.
Tammy has been principal of a middle school that has been recognized at the state level receiving recognition for being a School On The Rise in 2003, as well as receiving a Luminaria award for delivery of special education services in 2005. She also applied for and coordinated a $250,000 grant from New Mexico Public Education Department to improve math achievement for Native American students in six district middle schools during the 2005-2006 school year.
Tammy can provide support for the classroom teacher through training on instructional strategies in the middle school classroom and the components necessary to sustain implementation.
